Sketchbook: Hostile Origami
Sketchbook work for 11/20 Based on the initial doodle above which had an accretion of shard-like chevron shapes that I thought might translate interestingly to 3D. When I did so, the model had a sort of folded-paper look which I tried to preserve in the renders. I was inspired by some of the more aggressive adaptations of desert plants; spines, sharp leaves, hard waxy coatings etc. Biomimicry in architecture is often reflected as a smooth flow or a grouping of soft, sinuous forms. It's become synonymous with visions of urban renewal mediated by tech oligarchy. Jagged, hard-edged shapes also find their function in nature. I think these forms are a more honest reflection of how these exclusionary spaces interface with existing cities. With those in-situ renders, I imagined a new ecology growing up just out of sight in the shadows and between the gaps of this invasive species. Process-wise these are broadly indicative of my sketching process lately which involves bouncing betwe...
